Modified and enlarged over the centuries the church still boasts many of its original 12th and 13th century architectural elements and is known for its imposing ‘flying buttresses’ supporting the tower.
The church is Grade I listed and on Historic England’s Heritage At Risk register. Described by architectural Historian Clifton-Taylor as ‘architectural gem’ and ’a glory of Early English architecture in its earliest and purest phase’, the church and its location are still of immense importance today. In September 2019 John Hogg produced a short presentation designed to show how the architecture of St Hilda’s relates to the developing pattern of architecture elsewhere.
