Christopher Tennant; 12th Sep 1839 (59); eldest son of the above; died suddenly at Leeds and interred near this place.
He was distinguished by his persevering and patriotic exertions in promoting various public works tuning to develop the resources and increase the prosperity of the County of Durham and to benefit the country in general. His scheme proposed in the year 1819 for connecting the South Durham coalfield with the River Tees by means of a canal indirectly laid the foundation of public railways in the country – the CLARENCE, the STOCKTON HARTLEPOOL Railway and the . . . .
