The Organ was built around 1871 by Conacher of Huddersfield, and had three manuals and pedals, all with mechanical action. In the 1930s it was rebuilt by Wood and Wordsworth of Leeds with tubular pneumatic action. The most recent rebuild, by Adrian Cooke of Stockton (who now builds organs in America), uses direct electric action to operate the pallets in the original soundboards. At that time, some electronic additions were made to the specification without jeopardising the integrity of the pipe organ. The organ is now maintained by John Lightbown and Sons, of Morpeth. |
